Brunello di Montalcino is one of the most famous Italian and worldwide red wines, characterized by a prolonged aromatic persistence, a harmonious and elegant body, and flavors on the palate that evoke undergrowth and spicy notes. Despite being a highly appreciated product, it should be noted that not all bottles have respected and continue to respect the high-quality standards equally, also due to the climatic variations that have occurred over the years. For this reason, we at Enjoy Montalcino want to highlight the best vintages of Brunello di Montalcino from the last 10 years.

Vintage 2009

The excellent vintage of 2009 is thanks to a winter that remained within average temperatures and precipitation levels. Abundant spring rains slightly slowed down plant growth, while the summer was moderately dry with a decent frequency of precipitation. The fact that the harvest took place at its regular pace, finding the grapes perfectly mature, made it an outstanding vintage.

Vintage 2011

The 2011 vintage was characterized by abundant precipitation and high temperatures that led to plant growth about two weeks ahead of schedule. The harvest was therefore carried out ten days earlier than expected, and although the yield registered low quantities, the grapes had fantastic quality.

Vintage 2012

The winter of 2012 was very cold with numerous snowfalls that provided a decent water accumulation in the aquifers. Spring and summer, on the other hand, were relatively warm with scarce rainy episodes, compensated for by those in the month of September. The 2012 vintage was undoubtedly one of the best for Brunello di Montalcino, as it proved perfect for aging.

Vintage 2013

2013 was a year characterized by a rainy winter, which balanced the soil moisture following the drought in 2012. Flowering and bud break also occurred as predicted, the climate remained average, reminiscent of traditional past vintages. Harvest began at the end of September, producing wines with remarkable finesse, consistency, and good structure.

Vintage 2015

The winter of the 2015 vintage saw low precipitation and very cold temperatures during the first months of the year. Spring rains also allowed for excellent water reserves to accumulate for use during the summer months. September was mild, with good day-to-night temperature variations that favored perfect grape maturation. A 2015 Brunello di Montalcino presents intense color tones, vigorous tannins, and substantial alcoholic elements. The aromas are notably fruity, placing it among its best vintages.

Vintage 2016

The rains in 2016 were well-distributed and uniform, while plant maturation occurred late, resulting in wines with significant tannic and aromatic qualities. The Brunello di Montalcino from that vintage is also highly recommended.

Vintage 2017

Speaking of exceptional vintages, 2017 fully meets this requirement, as it experienced a snowy and cold winter, while the summer turned out to be particularly dry with numerous waves of African heat. Fortunately, the period before the harvest saw light rainfall, favoring the final maturation phase of the vines. Despite the adverse conditions, the results were excellent, as the wines are well-balanced.

How to store Brunello di Montalcino

The first golden rule for storing Brunello di Montalcino involves keeping it in a cool place, at a constant temperature of 16°C. The bottles should also be stored horizontally, favoring humidity in the cork's end. By following this simple precaution, the dreaded cork shrinkage that allows oxygen to enter, the arch-nemesis of the precious organoleptic properties of the wine, can be avoided.

Come abbinare il Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino pairs perfectly with all red meats roasted, grilled, or in stewed form, such as pot roast, stew, and braised dishes. It also goes well with white meats, game, and organ meats like liver cooked in stew with spices. When it comes to cured meats and cheeses, aged options like Parmigiano Reggiano and Pecorino Toscano are excellent choices, perhaps served with jams and dried fruit. Sweet lovers will find it delightful paired with dry pastries (especially blueberry cookies) and dark chocolate with a minimum cocoa content of 70%.
